Dumbo’s Belgian Block + Infrastructure Reconstruction
Modern infrastruction meerts historic charm.
For decades, Team Dumbo advocated to the City to restore and modernize Dumbo’s famed Belgian block streets, upgrade water and sewer infrastructure, and finish the neighborhood’s plaza spaces.
This $108 million NYC construction project, HWKKP005, broke ground in April 2019, and was completed in December 2025.

Dumbo Before the Bridges | On view through February 2027
Dumbo Before the Bridges is an exhibit of artifacts unearthed during “HWKKP005,” Dumbo’s street reconstruction project. HWKKP005 project archeologist Mark Tweedie has curated a dozen objects from the 2,771 discovered, many dating back to the early 1800s. Alongside historic photos, this exhibit offers a peek into the industrial and home lives of Brooklynites along the waterfront–well before the bridges which so define the Dumbo of today were built.

(The last) Belgian Block Party
On November 19, 2025, the community gathered to makr this major milestone. More than 400 Dumbonians came out to celebrate the end of construction this week. We screamed, popped confetti and enjoyed Belgian block-shaped cakes from Dawn’s til Dusk, pizza from Ignazios & Front Street Pizza, and tunes by Cara Lee Sparry. And a special thanks to NYC DOT, NYC DDC, Councilmember Restler, and Two TreesNY for making this all happen!
