Living ‘Kyō-ai’ Indigo & Beeswax Resist Dyeing Workshop by Riku Matsuzaki
- This event has passed.
September 28 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Cost: $250

Loop of the Loom is honored to host a special hands-on workshop with Kyoto indigo artisan Riku Matsuzaki, exploring the depth and beauty of Japanese indigo dyeing.
Using Kyō-ai made by Matsuzaki, brought from Japan and fermented at Loop of the Loom, each participant will dye either a tenugui scarf or a high-quality bandana. You will learn the traditional wax-resist method—one of the earliest resist-dyeing techniques—using 100% organic beeswax to create your own modern design. Through this process, you can freely draw patterns and reveal the luminous, transparent beauty unique to Kyō-ai blue.
Why did the Japanese inherit and preserve the unique fermentation method for indigo dyeing? While your pieces are drying, Matsuzaki will give a lecture, offering a rare chance to deepen your understanding of indigo—or even how to cultivate it yourself.
Join Loop of the Loom for this unique opportunity to learn directly from a master of Kyoto indigo and experience a living color that continues to inspire across generations.
