SUMMARY:Absence Fantasia
DESCRIPTION:Stump Gallery is pleased to present Absence Fantasia\, an exhibition of new paintings and sculptures by Mariel Montes. The large paintings are constructed using small ephemera: a votive candle of a guardian angel\, a scratch-off lotto ticket\, in some sense\, both objects of faith\, both flat illustrations with a promise toward something grander than current material circumstances. \nThe surfaces are built up with different mediums: airbrush\, wax\, sand\, oil\, the folds of the paper label thickened with marble dust. The initial structure of the image gives way to the painting: areas drip\, are sanded and scratched into. \nThe wax sculptures are of Christmas village people\, balanced on pinecones or abandoned tire rims\, attempts at circular unity. Candles are used both as memorial and as celebration. Birthday candles rest atop the figures like a cake\, and yet\, in Sinking House\, the foreboding weight of metal buries our toy house. They dance on our daily scrap: cardboard\, abandoned tires. There is something about redirecting faith toward our small daily acts: Dishwater baptism. Genuflect over the fallen bird. \nThe small paintings contain psychological landscapes: empty bedrooms seen indirectly through reflection. Fire in My Bedroom doesn’t depict the titular emergency; the fire is felt elsewhere. Toys often serve as a subject matter for my paintings. They are a microcosm of the world\, with built in narratives of a pre-established order. They are also frozen representations of figures\, flesh turned plastic\, porcelain. The being-in-stagnation\, the contemporary alienated self. Paper dolls are such\, as flat headless non-beings in Window Gawker and Commuter Doll. Windowed and mirrored interiors of Brooklyn collapse beneath her\, where she hovers above but is not situated. She is the absence of these spaces. Bunny Disco is much the same: the disco ball collapses as the porcelain bunny tries to gather his own fragmented reflection\, and in doing so\, confronting the gaze of the viewer. This lifeless gaze matches\, maybe\, the viewer’s own lifeless stagnation\, the crystallized self. Perhaps\, these little imitations of life end up containing more life energies than we do\, in our alienated state. One imagines that when we turn off the light and leave the room\, they start dancing. Everything fantasia. \nMariel Montes (b. 1994\, Brooklyn\, NY) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn\, NY. She received an MFA in studio art from Hunter College in 2025. Montes’ work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Blade Study\, New York\, NY; and Hyacinth Gallery\, New York\, NY. Montes has participated in selected group exhibitions at Frisson Gallery\, New York\, NY; Rema Hort Mann Foundation\, New York\, NY; Crisis Galería\, Lima\, PE; Plum Gallery\, New York\, NY; The Alcove\, Brooklyn\, NY; 191 Henry Street\, New York\, NY; XYZ Gallery\, Brooklyn\, NY; 205 Hudson Gallery\, New York\, NY; Serving the People\, New York\, NY; Tiber59\, Mexico City\, MX; amongst others. Montes will participate in the Chanorth Residency\, Pine Plane\, NY\, in May\, 2026.

SUMMARY:What Stayed With Me: Opening Night
DESCRIPTION:What Stayed With Me is a solo exhibition by Yehudit Feinstein\, presenting works on paper and canvas created with markers and mixed media. Rooted in memory\, inheritance\, and personal narrative\, the exhibition examines how lived experience is carried forward through repetition\, gesture\, and the accumulation of marks over time.\nFeinstein’s drawings unfold as emotional landscapes\, moving fluidly between the intimate and the collective. Family histories\, moments of rupture\, loss\, and acts of rebuilding surface not as linear stories\, but as traces\, layered\, revisited\, and reworked. Line becomes both language and residue: a way of holding what cannot be fully articulated\, yet refuses to disappear. \nhttps://www.bacistudio.com/calendar

SUMMARY:Artist talk: an evening with Rob Woodcox
DESCRIPTION:Third Door Brooklyn is so honored to welcome Rob Woodcox into their space for an intimate artist talk. \nRob is a fine art photographer and film director whose work lives at the intersection of the human body\, the natural world\, and the stories we carry inside both. He is known for his images of bodies stalled in motion\, a deeply choreographed exploration of what the human form can say when given space to speak. Through each image\, he strives to capture fragments of a vivid life woven from the threads of reality\, memory\, and dreams. The result is something that stops you in your tracks. \nHis work is inseparable from his advocacy. Rob has produced projects raising consciousness and conversation around the US foster system and adoption\, queer identity\, body neutrality\, racial equality\, and environmental justice\, all causes that aren’t peripheral to his art but woven into its very core. In 2025\, he was awarded the prestigious Erarta Prize at the Zona Maco Art Fair for his photograph Otherworld\, recognized by public vote as the standout piece of the fair. \nRob moves fluidly between mediums. He released his first photographic art book Bodies of Light in 2020\, made his directorial debut with We Are Molecular in partnership with the Royal Ballet in London\, and his short film Honey to the Moon screened at the Oscar-qualifying Provincetown International Film Festival. \nThis conversation will be as much about process as it is about image. What does it mean to use your art as a vehicle for something larger than yourself? \nCome ready to be moved\, to ask questions\, and to sit with someone who has dedicated his life to finding beauty and truth in equal measure. \nFind more of his work here: https://robwoodcox.com/

SUMMARY:Forwarding – A Two Person Painting Exhibition by Felix Benton and Adrian Ocone
DESCRIPTION:Stump Gallery is pleased to present “Forwarding”\, a two-person exhibition of new paintings by Felix Benton and Adrian Ocone. Bringing together two practices invested in structure as both framework and provocation\, the exhibition explores how grids\, repetition\, and spatial divisions become points of departure rather than fixed endpoints\, allowing order to be tested\, softened\, and set into motion. Across distinct approaches to abstraction\, both artists use underlying systems to generate variation and drift\, positioning painting as an open field where structure produces movement\, instability\, and ongoing possibility.

SUMMARY:Group Show Art Opening: You Can Cut All the Flowers\, but You Cannot Keep Spring From Coming
DESCRIPTION:You Can Cut All the Flowers\, but You Cannot Keep Spring From Coming is Third Door Brooklyn’s first group art exhibition\, inspired by a widely shared line of hope and resistance often attributed to the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. The exhibition reflects on what cannot be taken away. \nThe exhibition emerges in a time marked by political turmoil\, ongoing genocide\, climate crisis\, and profound collective grief. Digital spaces increasingly isolate us within our own belief systems\, making empathy and connection more difficult. In the face of such loss and urgency\, the question arises of what role art can possibly play. \nArt speaks to our inner lives. It alleviates stress and anxiety\, expands empathy by offering perspectives beyond our own\, and gives form to feelings that may otherwise remain unnamed. It creates space for reflection\, mourning\, and hope\, often simultaneously. Art points to what we have been too busy to notice. It is one of the most enduring aspects of our humanity\, and it persists even in the harshest conditions. \nThe works in this exhibition approach renewal through multiple forms and gestures. Mary Royall’s paintings of light draw attention to the immediate world around us\, urging awareness of what is already present. Dipa Halder’s abstract works made with raw pigment and salt register traces of presence and absence. Devon Grime’s images of shared tables and meals reflect moments of gathering\, nourishment\, and the pleasure of being together. Sophie Kitching’s abstract florals on paper mark a return to painting after time away during the birth of her daughter. Gabrielle Guthrie’s split-panel abstract landscapes speak to a desire for connection despite distance and division. \nPresented within a movement studio\, the exhibition embodies Third Door Brooklyn’s commitment to creating an inclusive community space where creativity is accessible to all. Third Door Brooklyn holds that art is essential to human flourishing\, not a luxury\, but a vital expression of our shared humanity. Creating and experiencing art in community fosters connection\, growth\, and resilience\, and is something that cannot be taken away. \nYou Can Cut All the Flowers\, but You Cannot Stop Spring From Coming unfolds from winter into spring\, inviting reflection on what persists even through the harshness of winter: the light\, the air\, the ground\, and the people around us who remain a part of us.

SUMMARY:Body of Work: Group Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Body of Work brings the work of Nice Try Tattoo—a collaboratively-owned\, artist-run studio in Brooklyn—into dialogue with the fine art world\, offering a legitimizing platform for artists whose primary medium is skin. Founded by Cierson Zambo\, Sara Sremac\, and Ella Sklaw\, Nice Try represents a rejection of the hierarchical\, exploitative models that have historically defined both tattoo shops and art galleries. By showcasing work across bodies and paper\, the exhibition affirms that artistry doesn’t change based on its canvas. In presenting Nice Try’s cooperative model alongside Harsh Collective’s artist-first approach\, Keeping the Score is less about curation and more about practicing what both spaces preach: community over gatekeeping\, equity over extraction\, and artists at the center.
