SUMMARY:Book Launch: Exhumed by Aaron Mahnke
DESCRIPTION:About the Book. \nAn engrossing and macabre exploration of the folklore and early medical practices that led to the New England Vampire Panic in the 1890s\, from critically acclaimed podcaster and bestselling author Aaron Mahnke. \nWhat would drive a man to exhume the body of his daughter and remove her heart? That question has haunted Aaron Mahnke\, creator and host of the award-winning podcast Lore. Fueled by a decade of research\, Mahnke excavates the past to understand the hysteria that fueled the ghastly exhumation of Mercy Brown in 1892\, who like her mother and sister before her\, succumbed to “consumption” at the age of 19. \nWith Exhumed\, Mahnke presents a unique history of the intersection of folklore and science\, and how pop culture and both genuine medical advancements and pseudoscience of the time shaped the perspectives of people in 19th century America. From the death of George Washington to Mary Shelley writing Frankenstein\, Mahnke leads reads on a fascinating journey through history\, touching on methods of mummification\, the multifaceted role of executioners\, medicine made from corpses\, European folklore that traveled across the Atlantic\, and so much more. He reveals that as shocking as Brown’s exhumation might seem\, it also reflected surprisingly common attitudes and beliefs about the relationship between the dead and the living\, the nature of science and magic\, and the fate of a human soul. It all builds to a revelatory understanding of human behavior that continues to this very day.

SUMMARY:Author Event: "We Hexed the Moon" with Mollyhall Seeley
DESCRIPTION:Join Brooklyn Public Library and POWERHOUSE Arena for a reading and conversation with author Mollyhall Seeley on her novel\, We Hexed the Moon (Saga Press\, 2026). Copies of the book will be available for purchase from POWERHOUSE Arena Bookstore. \nThis event will be held at POWERHOUSE Arena (28 Adams Street). Registration encouraged. \nABOUT THE BOOK\n“Bunny” meets “The Craft” in this speculative debut about four best friends who perform a ritual on the moon in a last-ditch attempt to hold onto one another but are forced to reckon with the consequences. \nIt is the summer after high school graduation\, and four island-grown best friends are about to be forced apart by their Plans for the Future. Rather than process the world of expectations bearing down on them or the secrets they’ve kept hidden even from one another\, they perform a ritual on the moon in an impulsive fit of teen bravado. \nThey don’t expect it to actually work. \nBut suddenly the moon is gone from the sky and at their sleepover\, and she’s not interested in going back where she came from. As the balmy August night unfolds\, the girls scramble to find a human sacrifice to replace the moon before their world is plunged into chaos. \nEqually tender and biting\, We Hexed the Moon is coming-of-age at its best\, cutting to the very quick of girlhood to reveal hilarious and brutally honest insights about friendship\, gender\, and desire.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: The Wound is Where the Light Enters by Chris Young
DESCRIPTION:The inspiring memoir of a brilliant young man who\, sentenced to life in prison\, refused to surrender his future—a story so powerful that it transformed even the judge who handed down the sentence. \nIf our world were more just\, Chris Young would have been crossing a stage at college graduation at the age of 22. Instead\, he was marched into a maximum-security federal prison\, facing life under mandatory drug sentencing laws. Like far too many young Black men from his neighborhood in Clarksville\, Tennessee\, this was where his story was supposed to end. \nBut one day in the prison library\, a book caught his eye: an encyclopedia. As he began to turn the pages\, Chris felt himself transported. Knowledge became a portal. He began to confront the nihilism around him\, the trauma of his past\, and the cruelty of a system determined to confine him. From the library\, his cell\, and even solitary confinement\, Chris built an education from scratch\, studying philosophy\, art\, anthropology\, history\, physics\, and politics. He learned to analyze the stock market and taught himself how to code without a computer. He trained his mind—and refused to let prison dictate the limits of his imagination. At his sentencing hearing\, Chris gave such a moving speech that the judge resigned from his lifetime appointment to the bench and fought to free him. \nStarted in solitary confinement and finished beyond bars\, The Wound Is Where the Light Enters is a powerful meditation on choice\, consequence\, and human potential\, told through the story of a man who was never given a chance—and who fought until\, at last\, he was.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: United States of Oligarchy by Casey Michel
DESCRIPTION:A staggering examination of how America’s wealthiest infiltrated the government and allied with dictators\, transforming the U.S. from democracy to oligarchy. \nFor years\, a small group of billionaires has amassed increasing power\, steering American politics for their own benefit. Many of these figures are familiar. There’s Elon Musk\, who has used his wealth to help place Donald Trump back in the White House. There’s Mark Zuckerberg\, who has used his resources to transform America into his own digital playground. There’s Jared Kushner\, who has used family connections to gain more political power than he ever dreamed of. \nThere is only one word to describe such extreme levels of wealth\, avarice\, and political control: Oligarchy. But the oligarchs are not working alone. From China to Russia to Saudi Arabia and beyond\, many of these men have cultivated alliances with America’s most notorious adversaries\, opening the doors for autocrats around the world to sink their teeth into the U.S. Placing profit over patriotism\, they have transformed into vectors of influence for some of the world’s most repulsive dictatorships\, all of whom are trying to create a world dominated by imperialism and tyranny. Connecting everything from the devastation in Ukraine to destruction in Gaza to destabilization in Greenland\, these oligarchs have transformed American policy and American politics into their own private fiefdoms\, regardless of what Americans actually want. \nIn United States of Oligarchy\, Casey Michel illuminates a story decades in the making\, from the earliest efforts to corral and combat American oligarchs\, to the new crop of individuals monopolizing American democracy and making the world safe for dictatorship – all for their own benefit. \nThe oligarchs have risen\, and are attempting to reign. The only question remaining is whether or not it’s too late to stop them.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Blizzard of Lies by Dave Wedge
DESCRIPTION:In January 2022\, a Boston police officer turned up dead in the snow\, seemingly a victim of a simple hit-and-run.But Officer John O’Keefe’s death kicked off a scandalous whodunit that invited federal scrutiny and triggered nationwide outrage. \nThe explosive story of O’Keefe’s death\, and the subsequent accusation and trial of his girlfriend Karen Read\, ignited one of the most high-profile true crime mysteries in decades. The apparently open-and-shut manslaughter case quickly devolved into a chaotic mixture of lies\, institutional corruption\, and police cover-ups that threw the Massachusetts law enforcement scene into turmoil. \nAnd Read’s 2025 acquittal left O’Keefe’s death an unresolved mystery\, with more questions than answers. \nWith dramatic twists including a rogue journalist\, a mistrial\, and polarizing public protests—along with revelations that called several other murder cases into question—Blizzard of Lies is a Boston-area veteran reporter’s detailed and immersive account of one of the most controversial crime stories of his career. \nThe definitive narrative of a controversial\, headline-grabbing tragedy\, Blizzard of Lies dispels the myths and misinformation around John O’Keefe’s death to chronicle a vivid account of a complex case and the lasting emotional toll on all involved.

SUMMARY:Sugarcane to Glass: Rum and the Making of Caribbean Flavor
DESCRIPTION:Join chef and mixologist Nelson German and culinary anthropologist and author Andréa Lawson Gray in conversation with Tonya Hopkins\, aka The Food (& Drinks!) Griot\, exploring rum\, sugar\, and the histories that shape Caribbean flavor. Drawing from their book Caribbean Cocktails: Drinks and Bites from the Afro-Latino Diaspora\, they will examine how ingredients travel\, how knowledge is passed\, and how cultural expression takes form through food and drink. \nFocusing on sugarcane as a foundational crop and rum as both an industrial product and cultural practice\, the conversation will trace the movement of plants and people across the Caribbean and the African diaspora. Grounded in both scholarship and lived experience—including German’s Afro-Latino upbringing in New York’s Washington Heights—the discussion will consider how systems of trade\, labor\, and exchange continue to shape contemporary flavor. \nTogether\, the speakers will introduce the concept of “Distillery Justice” as a framework for thinking about authorship\, value\, and cultural memory in food and beverage today.
