The Dumbo Reflector
By David Crumley
Dumbo Archway
The ultimate neighborhood welcome sign! The Dumbo reflector was created in 2016 by artist David Crumley, in honor of Team Dumbo’s tenth anniversary. Using the Dumbo BID’s logo, its first iteration functioned as a binary clock, told you the traffic conditions on the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, and functioned as a sort of Magic 8 Ball – responding to questions when tweeted at. Today, it anchors the Dumbo archway, welcoming all to the neighborhood.

Fat Boy
By Leonard Ursachi
York Street at Adams Street
Fat Boy is one of Ursachi’s “bunker” sculptures. It contains three recessed, mirrored “windows”—referencing a bunker’s embrasures—but Ursachi based its form on a classical western cherub, or putto. Fat Boy’s title refers to the WWII atomic bombs, Little Boy and Fat Man. With its twin references to eros and war, Fat Boy speaks to the complexities of desire and violence. This sculpture was installed in October 2022, with support from NYC DOT Art, and is the first public artwork to grace the newly reconstructed York Street triangle.

Dumbo Walls: Water Game
Designed by Masaki Hanahara, hand-painted by Colossal
108 Adams Street
Inspired by toy-maker Tomy Group’s nostalgic Water Game from 1970s Japan, Hanahara blends his Brooklyn inspiration with his Japanese heritage to design a mural artwork bursting with movement, color, and playful energy. Think of it as a visual ripple effect, where the structured beauty of traditional Japanese aesthetics collides with the bold dynamism of NYC. Swing by, snap a pic, and get lost in the Water Game flow.

Watergate
By Casey Opstad
Dumbo Archway
For this mural, installed in 2013, Casey hand-painted 100,000 half-inch squares according to an eight-color schema inspired by the East River. The pixelated design is a nod to the digital designers of Dumbo and the wave-like motif transports onlookers straight to the Brooklyn waterfront, as if it is just beyond the gate. If all those pixelated squares were laid in a straight line, they would stretch for more than a mile!
